NEW LANDMARK FOR ALBERT ROAD, SOUTHSEA
Local glass artist and designer Vanessa Cutler has teamed up with Newcastle Upon Tyne based glass artist Cate Watkinson to design a new and exciting public art feature for Albert Road, Southsea.
The artists met at Sunderland University where Vanessa studied for and obtained her PhD and Cate is Senior Lecturer in Architectural glass. Vanessa, investigating new technologies to use in her glass art work has exhibitied nationally and internationally.
As well as teaching Cate has run her own glass business for 20 years. Her commissions include 9 glass seats for the centre of Newcastle, a screen for Newcastle Airport arrivals hall and a 7m high sculpture on the roof of Debenham's in Gateshead's MetroCentre.
Vanessa and Cate have worked together on several projects, the most recent being designing seats made from recycled glass for the Baltic redevelopment in Gateshead. This new commission gives Vanessa the opportunity to work on home ground for the first time.
They will be running a series of workshops in the coming months to allow the local community to become involved.
Themes are currently under discussion and drawings are being developed to add to the regeneration of the Albert Road area. It is proposed that a contemporary glass, light and steel structure will emerge and become a prominent landmark within this historical city.
